Chapter Nineteen

After leaving the bag to the concierge, Luke strolled over to the florist. Brooke’s day would end with big news, and it could be really good or really bad. Flowers worked in either situation, didn’t they?

A wall of sweet scent greeted him as he pushed through the door.

“Hi there,” the woman behind the counter said. “Can I help you?”

“I’m looking for a bouquet.” He swiveled his gaze around the bright shop. Pointless. He knew nothing about flowers.

“Anything in particular?”

Roses were traditionally romantic, but Brooke didn’t strike him as rose woman. Wait. At the Little Chapel on the Strip, she’d asked for something that sounded like Ragnarök to him, and he’d laughed at the idea of her carrying Thor’s mighty hammer Mjolnir as a bouquet.

“Do you have something called ranu… Um, it starts with run or ran?”

“You must mean ranunculus. We have bunches. Any particular color? Or do you prefer a mix?” She nipped from behind the counter and led him to a collection of lollipop-colored bundles of flowers.

“A mix, please.” He pointed to an arrangement the size of a lamp. “Can I have that one?”

“Absolutely.” She hefted the bouquet and carried it to the counter to wrap in cellophane.

Back at the hotel, he settled into a comfortable chair in the lobby to catch up on comics and wait for Brooke. An hour ticked by, then two, then three. As each wedge of the clock disappeared, his confidence buckled. At a quarter to five, he called time of death. Lurking here bordered on desperate.

He crossed the lobby to the concierge. “Can I leave these with you for a guest?”

“Certainly,” the older gentleman said. “Would you like a pen and paper to leave a message?”

“Yes, thanks.” Luke was great at writing concise, factual briefs on complex issues, and this occasion was no different.
